As an avid thrifter, I mean an AVID thrifter I tend to get a lot of unique clothing that feels special to me. The hunt to find the perfect sweater in a sea of old smelly ones gives me the ultimate rush. It’s truly a hobby to me and a sport I consider myself quite good at. I crave the deals and too good to beat prices on cashmere, knits, and sometimes if your lucky designer.
I must admit as much as I love thrifting and shopping secondhand, stores like Forever21 and Tjmaxx always reel me back in. This past cyber Monday was especially difficult as sites like these had amazing deals on stuff I really wanted. I played the game of filling up my virtual cart and stared at the price that was way too cheap. I had my card ready but something was telling me to not do it. I didn’t end up getting anything but I felt bad for not taking advantage of the deal due to the insane amount of emails saying “don’t forget about your cart and your stuff is selling out!” I realized how much fast fashion needs to sell their supplies, especially on black Friday and Cyber Monday.
I decided to make a pact with myself, to stop buying fast fashion. This is a lot harder than it sounds to a trend freak like me who loves clothing. I used to think that if I was thrifting and shopping fast fashion I was helping at least a little bit. I am a victim of the “I have nothing to wear” monster always making a mental note of new clothing pieces I need but really just want. I will be writing about this journey of mine as a goal for the upcoming year. I will still go to Tjmaxx and browse but will now think twice about my purchases.
